    Debate | Reforming the Euro

    img_0281-1.jpg
A few weeks ago the Maastricht treaty turned 25. Could it organise its birthday party, it would certainly struggle to get the guest list right. The single currency it installed has expanded to 8 more countries, survived the worst global financial crisis of the past 80 years, but since 2010 it has also become for many countries the synonym of economic insecurity, decreasing living standards and mass-unemployment. Everywhere else it has become the central target of populist movements and their growing audience.

As key elections approach what could be the economic diagnosis of these challenges and how should centrist and pro-European movements structure their responses?

    Was the current crisis inevitable?
Could such a crisis be prevented in the future?
What does moral hazard mean for the single currency?
    Is economic convergence achievable?
Should the governance and convergence criteria be changed?
Should the mandates of the ECB and national central banks be reformed?
These are some of the many questions France's Mouvement Démocrate - as a pro-European and centrist political movement aims to provide answers to.
On Monday 27th, March MoDem organises a round table dedicated to these issues.

Panellists for this discussion will include

The debate will be moderated by Marianne Magnin (Northern Europe parliamentary candidate for the MoDem).
